Colorado in June can mean so many things; the coming of summer, gardens blooming, heat. But up in the high mountains, winter still holds reign, and when I head to these places, I take a heavy parka. Summit Lake lies below the peak of Mt. Evans, and when I was there in mid-June, it was cold, cloudy, quiet and blue. I was the only one there to feel the few snow flakes falling, and to appreciate this special place at twilight. Coming down the mountain some time after, thousands of miller moths crossed my path on their way up the peak, flying determinedly up the steep slopes like a winged storm, without pause even for my lights. It's truly another world up there, largely unseen in spite of its closeness to Denver. I hope I have helped make it more real for you.
